The story of Grid Lab Mind Pulse began not in a corporate boardroom, but in a cramped, sunlit studio tucked away in the backstreets of Shibuya, Tokyo, in the spring of 2018. Our founder, Kaito Tanaka, was a competitive swimmer and an architecture student who grew increasingly disillusioned with the athletic apparel available on the market. He found that most options were either technically proficient but aesthetically bland, or visually appealing but functionally inadequate. Frustrated by this compromise, Kaito began deconstructing his own gear, experimenting with different fabrics and silhouettes in his spare time, driven by a vision to create something that honored both his physical and his artistic sensibilities.
Kaito's hobby soon evolved into an obsession. He spent his savings on small bolts of advanced fabric and collaborated with local pattern makers to bring his sketches to life. The initial collection consisted of just three prototypes: a pair of compression leggings, a minimalist tank, and a versatile hoodie. He sold these first pieces to a small community of fellow athletes and artists in Tokyo, relying solely on word-of-mouth. The response was immediate and overwhelming, validating his belief that there was a significant demand for high end activewear that bridged the gap between performance and art. This grassroots success marked the official birth of Grid Lab Mind Pulse as a registered brand.
Over the next two years, Grid Lab Mind Pulse grew slowly and deliberately, fueled by a passionate community and a steadfast refusal to compromise on quality. We moved our operations from the cramped Shibuya studio to a larger design hub in the upscale district of Minami-Aoyama, establishing both our flagship store and our primary atelier. This period was defined by continuous learning and refinement, as we meticulously honed our production techniques and expanded our fabric library. We began to attract attention from international fitness enthusiasts who were drawn to the unique blend of Japanese minimalism and high-performance technology, establishing our reputation as a specialist source of premium gym wear.
